It's time to talk about the gap.

RECOVERING PERFECTIONIST

Hey there Reader,

It's time to talk about that gap I mentioned on Wednesday.

Specifically, the gap between who you are and what you’re actually spending your capacity on.

It shows up as resentment, as a bone-tired stretched-thin feeling, or as the creeping sense that you’re running on fumes while somehow still expected to be operating at full output.

And it’s been so normalised — the idea that everyone else’s needs come first and yours sit quietly at the bottom of the list waiting their turn.

Which they never quite get.

And I get it. I really do.

It’s easy to treat energy like it’s this unlimited resource.

Like you can just keep drawing from it and it’ll replenish itself overnight because that’s what it’s always done.

Except it doesn’t.

Not without deliberate tending.

Energy is precious, not infinite.

And when we treat it like it’s infinite, we overcommit, overstretch, and quietly rack up what I think of as capacity debt.

Not just managing the demands you’ve already agreed to, but also the fallout from saying yes when your whole body was screaming no.

The maths stops adding up really fast when you’re running on 20% and promising 100%.

So where does self-advocacy come in?

When you don’t know your own needs, don’t know where your limits are, or don’t feel like you’re allowed to name them — that gap between who you are and what you’re spending capacity on gets wider.

That’s a signal.

Not a moral failing or proof of the critical narrative that’s probably already having a field day in your head.

Evidence.

Neutral evidence that something’s out of alignment and worth a curious look.

Closing it starts with a question, not a fix: where haven’t I been advocating for what I actually need, and what got in the way of doing that?

If any of this landed — and especially if the resentment piece hit differently — please don’t pick that up as ammunition against yourself.

These are habits and patterns that were built to keep you safe.

They just haven’t had a software update in a while and they’re working from old information.

Not a character flaw.

You’re just being human.

Humans are messy and imperfect.

We’re doing our best with outdated operating systems.

When that happens, try to focus on finding ways to update the operating system rather than blame yourself for the responses you're getting from the old one.

And go gently.

Tell your perfectionist part this isn't a race.

If this landed, I'd love to know! Hit reply — genuinely. It makes my day every single time.

A little sneak preview before I go:

Community masterclasses are officially launching next month and — I won’t lie — I’m a bit terrified.

But mostly excited.

I’m kicking them off myself with a masterclass on overwhelm.

Exam season, the summer transition, all the things piling up — it can turn into a bit of a boiling pot, and I know a lot of you are already feeling it.

We’ll look at what overwhelm actually is, how to spot it when it’s creeping in, and go through some practical strategies for immediate relief.

If that sounds like exactly what you need right now, keep an eye out — I’ll be releasing the date very soon.

Best and brightest love, Beth x

BETH THOMAS RECOVERING PERFECTIONIST Hey there Reader, Happy Friday everyone! I’m sending this a week later than originally planned... Past me probably would have been in full shame spiral by now. Have I been annoyed with myself that I didn't send this when I'd promised to? Of course. Has it created a big swirly shame spiral that felt eternally torturous? Not so much! Current-me is choosing to see it differently: I’m meeting myself with kindness instead of judgment. (spoiler; this has not...

BETH THOMAS RECOVERING PERFECTIONIST Hey there Reader, Happy Friday! You’ve made it through another week. I hope you’re finding a moment to celebrate yourself for that. I have two quick updates, both for events next week that I’m genuinely excited about, and I’d love to see you there! Before that, I want to share a beautiful moment we had in the Curious Minds Collective. Last night was our games night, and we had a blast! It was a beautiful way to end the day and I didn't realise how much I...

BETH THOMAS RECOVERING PERFECTIONIST Hey there Reader, So. It is officially May. I know, I know... I've checked. Twice. Because as some of you very kindly pointed out last week, I got the dates spectacularly wrong (again) whilst joking with you about getting dates wrong. The irony was not lost on me! I am, if nothing else, consistent. But it did get me thinking. What happens when we hear something often enough that we just… stop questioning it? Not because it's obviously true. Not even...
