The bit that scared me a little

RECOVERING PERFECTIONIST

Hey there Reader,

We're nearly into May.

Nearly halfway through the year.

That's a bit hairy and scary in its own right.

Before we finish April's theme of self-advocacy and start moving into next month, let me bring up something I've actually been putting off mentioning.

Not consciously.

But when I look back, I've mentioned it in passing and then sort of… swerved around it.

Probably because it still makes me a little uncomfortable, even now.

Honesty.

About yourself.

With yourself.

All the self-advocacy stuff, the boundary-holding, the needs-meeting, doesn't really work without this underneath it.

You can know all the right language

understand your rights

believe in theory that your needs matter

But if you're not being honest about what's actually going on for you, there's very little solid ground to stand on.

And that's hard.

Because being honest about yourself requires you to be a bit vulnerable.

But I bet you're far better at saying unkind things to yourself than at just… acknowledging where you actually are.

You minimise your needs.

You make yourself smaller so other people feel comfortable.

You perform a version of okayness that you don't actually feel.

The thing that keeps coming up for me — and this is the part I find genuinely tricky — is acceptance.

Not the intellectual "yes yes, I accept that" kind.

The real kind.

Accepting your needs as mattering as much as anyone else's.

Accepting that your capacity genuinely varies, and that the version of you today isn't a failure to be the version of you from last Tuesday.

Accepting the part you might have played in getting somewhere, not to beat yourself up about it, but because accepting responsibility is actually where the power lives.

Fighting that — trying to sidestep it or fast-forward past it — tends to keep people stuck in a loop.

I've seen it.

I've lived it.

So as we head into May, I want to leave this with you: if you're feeling persistently stuck, or resentful, or just a bit icky and frustrated and you can't quite put your finger on it — is there something you're avoiding accepting?

Not as a gotcha.

Just worth sitting with.

Acceptance is personal. It's not linear.

But it does tend to be the thing that makes everything else — the boundaries, the self-advocacy, all of it — actually stick.

More on all of this next month.

Best and brightest love.

Beth x

BETH THOMAS RECOVERING PERFECTIONIST Hey there Reader, Happy Friday everyone! I’m sending this a week later than originally planned... Past me probably would have been in full shame spiral by now. Have I been annoyed with myself that I didn't send this when I'd promised to? Of course. Has it created a big swirly shame spiral that felt eternally torturous? Not so much! Current-me is choosing to see it differently: I’m meeting myself with kindness instead of judgment. (spoiler; this has not...

BETH THOMAS RECOVERING PERFECTIONIST Hey there Reader, Happy Friday! You’ve made it through another week. I hope you’re finding a moment to celebrate yourself for that. I have two quick updates, both for events next week that I’m genuinely excited about, and I’d love to see you there! Before that, I want to share a beautiful moment we had in the Curious Minds Collective. Last night was our games night, and we had a blast! It was a beautiful way to end the day and I didn't realise how much I...

BETH THOMAS RECOVERING PERFECTIONIST Hey there Reader, So. It is officially May. I know, I know... I've checked. Twice. Because as some of you very kindly pointed out last week, I got the dates spectacularly wrong (again) whilst joking with you about getting dates wrong. The irony was not lost on me! I am, if nothing else, consistent. But it did get me thinking. What happens when we hear something often enough that we just… stop questioning it? Not because it's obviously true. Not even...
