The speaker who won by saying less

BETH THOMAS

RECOVERING PERFECTIONIST

HReaderi,

I spent Friday at the Super Speaker Showcase, and I still haven't quite worked out what happened.

There was I, in a room packed with professional speakers โ€“ most with tons of experience, polished presentations, years of getting better.

All watched by VIP bookers from top agencies across the UK and beyond.

High stakes. High expectations. Absolutely no pressure!

Ten speakers. Fifteen minutes each. Nearly everyone used their entire time slot.

But the winner only spoke for just ten minutes.

She was the youngest person there.

The least experienced.

And she absolutely owned that room.

Vicky Owens โ€“ a social media virality expert with nearly 250,000 followers โ€“ proved something I needed to see: time is not the same thing as impact.

Experience doesn't guarantee connection.

Being the loudest or the longest doesn't make you the best.

She shared her story.

The real stuff โ€“ how she went from daily panic attacks and workplace bullying to building a company with eight employees and getting flown around the world for speaking gigs.

Her expertise came from lived experience rather than a pile of qualifications or years of practice.

From showing up and getting started.

We're so conditioned to think we need more.

More time.

More credentials.

More experience.

More proof we're "ready."

But ready for what?

To start?

To try?

To share what you actually know?

Obviously don't go picking up a scalpel without medical training, that's not a good idea.

But if you're waiting for permission to use what you've learned, to share what you've lived, to try the thing you keep thinking about โ€“ you're probably already more ready than you think.

Vicky couldn't get out of bed once.

Now she's teaching celebrity clients and winning speaker showcases.

What limiting belief is keeping you stuck right now?

What story are you telling yourself about why you can't start yet?

Because I guarantee someone else with less experience, less time, less of whatever you think you need โ€“ they're already doing it.

Your story can be your strength.

Your experiences are expertise.

The opportunities are there.

I wonder what is waiting for you on the other side of you giving yourself permission.

What's one thing you've been putting off because you thought you weren't ready yet?

Hit reply and tell me. I'd love to hear.

Best and brightest love.

BETH THOMAS RECOVERING PERFECTIONIST Hi Reader. By the time you're reading this, I'll be deep into running the Super Speaker Showcase with my friend Michelle Mills-Porter. Not speaking at it. Running it. And there's a story here I need to tell you. I applied to speak at this showcase twice. I didn't get in the first time. That hurt. I didn't get in again the second time either. But I made the reserve list. That might not sound like winning. But it was moving forward. The first time was a no....

BETH THOMAS RECOVERING PERFECTIONIST Hi, Reader I blocked someone this week. A therapist, would you believe. Someone in a position of authority who should have known better. They'd been leaving comments on my TikTok videos that were not just incorrect โ€“ they were harmful. I love a good debate as much as anyone else. I'm all for exchanging ideas, challenging each other, growing together. But this wasn't that. This was someone using clinical language in an unhealthy way to cause damage....

BETH THOMAS RECOVERING PERFECTIONIST Hi Reader, I was asked recently when fear last got in my way. You wanna know the answer? Every. Single. Day. There's a constant war in my head between "oversharing" and "being real." And fear often wins. So I stay quiet about things that need to be said. Things that might actually help you. Things that are part of my lived experience โ€“ and probably yours too. I know the difference between vulnerability that creates connection and just dumping my emotions...
